Arguments about style are all besides the point here - and mostly come from understandably frustrated Arsenal fans. Arsenal, in fine form as they are, are capable of tearing most teams apart at the Emirates - a fact aptly displayed in a shaky opening ten minutes last night - so, to shut up shop and come away with a point is a great result for City, especially considering how close the sides are in the table. Come the end of the season, the point (and preventing Arsenal from taking three) may be worth more than knowing we'd valiantly thrown everything into an away defeat.
Arsenal are renowned for playing the most attractive football in the country nowadays and their transformation from George Graham's methodical team of the early nineties to Wenger's school of footballing purity today would appear to lead them to demand the same from everyone else. But it is more simple than that, most teams will go to the Emirates to defend - just as most teams come to Eastlands to defend (ones with means, such as United and Chelsea, as well as ones without) - it is just that this was an opportunity for Arsenal to get one over on their new rivals and they were mercilessly thwarted - which is as understandably frustrating for Arsenal fans, as it is a pleasing result for City fans.
It may have seemingly lacked any ambition, but it did show a resoluteness that City have only recently acquired. Taking last night out of the equation, City have been playing quite open attacking football for a couple of months now. This has largely been down to the combinations of David Silva and Yaya Toure. If last night highlights anything it is how reliant City have become on David Silva as a creative force. Yaya can do it, and in the first half he was our only real attacking threat (before he was pulled back in the second) but, without Silva's ability, there was no one else in midfield who was capable of putting their foot on the ball.
Arguably this is where the game became so difficult for us. The skill and movement of Wilshere, Fabregas, Nasri et al, bypassed Barry and De Jong for most of the game (not helped by two particularly soft early bookings given to the pair) - and Barry's woeful passing, in particular, meant we rarely got a foothold on the game. Yaya was then played in his Barcelona position for one of the first times since his arrival at the club - and this stout defence was enough to reduce Arsenal to long range efforts. Joe Hart's excellent save from Van Persie's sweet strike was the closest Arsenal got after the opening quarter of an hour.
One would hope that common sense will prevail in the case of Zabaleta's red card. If standing up to Sagna isn't a red card offence, then it will have to be rescinded. It was such a nothing incident - Sagna's 'headbutts' were ridiculous and would probably be better classed as posturing, but in the murky world of FA rules, they may be enough for Sagna to retain his punishment. The general stance on appeals seem to be: 'if something happened, leave it as it was; if nothing happened, remove the punishment.' I would be surprised if Zabaleta doesn't get off.
It may not have been an entertaining watch, but the point is worth more to City than Arsenal - hence the din of frustration that met the final whistle. A poor/tired midfield display made for a more uncomfortable contest than was presumably intended, but the end justifies the means and a point taken at the Emirates from an in form Arsenal team is about as good a result as I could have hoped for last night.
I can understand your point but on the other hand you've spent more money on new and quality players than any other premier league team, and you come to the emirates and play more negative than Stoke. Painful to watch. The real winners were Manure so cheers for that.
ReplyDeleteAfter all the "we want to show Arsenal what we can do 11 v 11" talk, City totally embarassed themselves last night.
ReplyDelete£300 million on players & didn't even get out of their own half. Spare me the defensively great speech, it was luck that stopped you from getting smashed 3-0... again.
I was more impressed with West Brom.
City showed what a joke of a club they were last night. I reckon Leeds will put in a better performance on Saturday.
Zabaleta stood over Sagna when he was on the ground, thus initiating the conflict. Sagna then got up at mimicked Zabaleta's posture.
ReplyDeleteBoth reds.
Don't you have £50m worth of left backs in Kolarov, Bridge and Lescott who can play there and punt it forward to Tevez then roll around for 5 mins?
Agree - great point and fantastic effort from City. Realisitically, the only team at the moment who can go to the Emirates and outplay Arsenal in a passing, attacking game are Barcelona. I think some of the City 'fans' who've been posting negative comments are just unbelievable; 10 points out of 12 over Christmas is a fantastic result; how anyone can criticise that is beyond me
ReplyDelete"most teams will go to the Emirates to defend...". Sure they will. But even they will put some effort into mustering an attack. And most teams haven't spent the last two years buying players in the same way that Imelda Marcos used to buy shoes.
ReplyDeleteThe manager complains that his side have had to play 4 games in ten days. Either ingnorant or oblivious of the fact that, erm, so has everyone else. Then says it would have been different if his team had a had a rest. Again, erm, ditto.
To defend the pathetic effort last night is perhaps to show City up for what they really are. The richest kid in the playground but still with the mentality of the poor house. The parallels with Chelsea in the early days of Abramovich are striking. Not least of which is the hiring of a clearly out of his depth manager who is really just a placeholder for a real name once some of the heavy lifting is done.
But really, must try harder. No that's wrong. Must try.....
You can say all you need to about City....but you coudn't break us down, at home, in front of all your fans, with all your 'total football'....
ReplyDeletehaha - totally rinsed you more like. It'll take at least another half a billion to get your steaming pile of a team anywhere near half as good as what the Arse produced last night
ReplyDeleteAnon 12.45.
ReplyDeleteNot that you make my point at all....
Joke club, 2nd in the league. FORZA MANCINI.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lack of respect these Gooners have for their own club. Last night, Arsenal played so well they would have beaten any other team in the land and they near as dammit beat us. Maybe we rode our luck in the first 20 minutes but then we restricted them to long-range pops on goal.
ReplyDeletePerhaps these Gooners should be praising their own players rather than tossing around laughable comments - under the cover of anonymity, I note - about a rival manager being out of his depth or City being a joke club or Zabaleta somehow being responsible for Sagna's red card. That's blind arrogance.
Have these librarians not seen their club grow into a free-flowing skilful and attractive Premiership force over time? Do they expect City to magically snap their fingers and do the same? However much it costs, it takes time for a team to gel - and ours will over the next season or two. Then we'll come to the Emirates with more attack in mind. Last night we came with a "have what we hold" attitude and got penned back by some superb Arsenal play. Why not celebrate that than throw stupid insults around about something you clearly don't understand?
I can understand the frustration of Arsenal fans, we parked a bus and you couldn't find a way past it. As a City fan/season ticket holder, I'm not naive enough to think we could have gone to your ground with 2 key players missing and think we could have out played you. Yes we've spent millions, but as everyone keeps telling us it takes time to gel. You can't have it both ways, saying we don't have team ethic and unity but if we stop you from winning, then it's because we've spent millions and should be able to out play you! You play wonderful flowing football, there i've said it, but you should be able to break us down and win, but you couldn't. Who's the better team? Probably Arsenal at the moment, but we left your ground with a point. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lot of bitter ignorant rose-tinted gooners...
ReplyDeleteLast night showed City desperately miss Silva and that sure they were incredibly defensive minded but to suggest this is the only way they can play is ridiculous.... City had about as much luck last night as Arsenal did at Eastlands...
Great point for us!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure all the top teams had us down to lose and for them all to win.
So its one point gained on United, 3 on Arsenal and 4 on both Spurs and Chelsea so not a bad night's work at all!
How vital last night may be come the end of the season!
Still got a small club mentality. Afraid to play against the big scary clubs!
ReplyDeleteYou're not a relegation calibre team anymore, stop playing like it.
No other team in the league has played that negatively at emirates this season, heck West Brom came and outplayed, they actually attacked.
Small club mentality still, need to get rid of that.
anonymous 12:40...
ReplyDelete"Zabaleta stood over Sagna when he was on the ground, thus initiating the conflict... Both reds"
hmmm.... I think I may need to check my rulebook!
Hey, hang on chaps ! Arsenal were missing their key player - Mark Clattenberg.
ReplyDeleteEastlands 2010 - Boyata sent off in the first minute for an iffy challenge which would never in a million years result in a Manure or Arsenal player being sent off.
Eastlands 2009 - van Persie ( as usual, getting away with blue murder, Adebayor being victimised to such an extent that Clattenberg " changes" his report to allow the F.A. to convene a kangaroo court to punish Adebayor.
A good point for City, but they will regret dropping 2 points here ; they're a much better team than the Arse ( yes, money talks ! ) and Mancini should be a lot more positive a lot more often.
So if we go for a realistic result, we have a "small club mentality"? If we throw caution to the wind and lose, we're not top four material? Those green eyes may need a blink or two to clear their vision.
ReplyDeletedid any fan of city or arsenal realistically expect anything other than a battling defensive performance once silva and balo were out of the equation? i'm afraid the 'boring city' chants only reveal the gooners' frustration and desperation that they were unable to score, projected onto the team that had a few scares early on and then dealt with the 'most creative team in the country' fairly easily.
ReplyDeleteteams like west brom have nothing to lose when they come to the New Library (a jibe almost as cheap as those from the goons) - they expect to lose and that's why they come out and play with no fear. we're battling to stay above the likes of arsenal and i wouldnt be surprised if we do it, especially with handy little points like this one.
very interesting to hear that we got our tactics wrong from a club that has not had a sniff of the championship in years, all in all.
lastly, 'you've spent XXXX million on all this talent why dont you attack?' is another nonstarter of an argument. half of those players are defenders and defensive midfielders
massive point. big psychological blow to arsenal. never seen the arsenal players look so frustrated, we broke their spirit. now we've got a few days to rest the players, wheel out dzeko and the reserves to play leicester at the weekend and then come out all guns blazing against wolves. CTID.
ReplyDeletePsychological blow?! Deluded!!
ReplyDelete4 points take from you this season, outclassed in both games, your players know, you all know and your manager knew it before the game.
Good luck at Old Trafford, Stamford bridge and Anfield, we've played at all of them already. Doubt you'll get as lucky as you did last night.
Can't buy class, can by luck. ZZZZZZZZZzzz
"lastly, 'you've spent XXXX million on all this talent why dont you attack?' is another nonstarter of an argument. half of those players are defenders and defensive midfielders"
ReplyDeleteSo...
25m Milner
7m Johnson
25m Adebayor
17m Jo
32 Robinho
32 Tevez
27m Balotelli
17m Santa Cruz
10m SWP
Maybe if you played some of them instead of 10 defensive midfielders, people wouldn't say the quote you had an issue with.
Small club mentality.
a 'big club' should win if they play that well at home. stop looking to blame others for falling short.
ReplyDeletethree new defenders in the backline struggled for 10mins and then nothing? yep... I'd be wound-up if i were a gooner!
Well done City, At the end of the day, what matters is to get the right result however way you play to fulfill our target this year to be in top four. Keep in mind regardless of the results, there are always accusations. If we win, it is claimed that we buying it, if we lose or draw, then it claimed such an expensive assembled team is incapable of winning. We will reach our target this year and years to come and show-oriented teams like Arsenal will be chasing for a title for unforeseeable years to come
ReplyDeleteTwo offensive buys for Mancini, Balotelli and Silva. . . both out. . . who cares if 25 mil was spent on Adebayor if the manager (who didn't buy him) doesn't trust him. Perfect example of playing what you've been dealt and achieving your short term goal within a long term plan. What's Arsenal's excuse? They blame the other team for not being able to achieve their goal. Isn't that the definition of a victory?
ReplyDeleteGunnar Halle?
